For my first post here, I thought I’d share a screengrab from my Adwords account. The date range is from early 2002 to present, and shows some of the money I’ve spent for both of my businesses. I started using Adwords to get freelance web development jobs. Gradually I switched over to teaching web development (via downloadable videos) which accounts for the roller coaster ride in spending from late ‘03 to now.
This is the first time in a while I’ve looked at all my spending on Adwords, and I was hoping it would be over “one…million…dollars” just so I could repeat that in my head in a Dr. Evil voice. But it looks like I’m a few years off, especially at my current spending rate, which is quite a bit less than it once was. I love Adwords, but now that my downloadable-vid business has been around for a few years, I’m experimenting with cutting my ad budget by about 80% and seeing how much business I lose. So far so good though, as I haven’t lost as much as I’ve retained. Which means, mo’ money, for spending less.
First on the spending chopping block were Content Network ads. These are ads that don’t run on Google.com but on other sites (and the site owners make partial revenue through Adsense). I didn’t stop running every Adsense ad, but just got much choosier about where these ads are run. I cut off the juice to any click that didn’t originate from these countries….
•Andorra (Country)
• Australia (Country)
• Belgium (Country)
• Brazil (Country)
• Canada (Country)
• Denmark (Country)
• Finland (Country)
• France (Country)
• Germany (Country)
• Gibraltar (Country)
• Greece (Country)
• Iceland (Country)
• Ireland (Country)
• Italy (Country)
• Liechtenstein (Country)
• Luxembourg (Country)
• Malta (Country)
• Mexico (Country)
• Monaco (Country)
• Netherlands (Country)
• Norway (Country)
• Portugal (Country)
• San Marino (Country)
• South Africa (Country)
• Spain (Country)
• Sweden (Country)
• Switzerland (Country)
• United Kingdom (Country)
• United States (Country)
• Vatican (Country)
• Virgin Islands (British and US) (Country)
You’ll notice I left Adsense running on the obvious countries, mainly those with primarily native English speakers ( since English is spoken in the videos I sell). And most of Europe is still there, because well, last time I went there everyone spoke English. But why’d I leave Brazil and get rid of most of South America? Well Brazilians have spent a decent amount of money on the site. Or at least enough of them have emailed me and said “Hey, I’m from Brazil and have a question about buying.” And my two best friends growing up were Brazilian, so maybe that helped. By the way, I have no idea where Andorra is but for some reason I left ads running there. And how could I not advertise in the Vatican? Popes need to learn about da interweb too.
Most of my Search Network advertising is still in place. And exactly as it was 3 or 4 years ago. The Adwords Search Network places ads directly into Google.com , so if someone is searching for say, “Flash tutorials”, thats someone I definitely want to shift over to the site. I’d call that an interested buyer. Although if I were to compare the number of buyers to the number of visitors to the site, it would be around 0.03 to 0.05%. So “interested buyer” might not be the best description of my average visitor. I haven’t run this number, but I’ll guesstimate about 60,000 buyers from about 15 million visitors (Yahoo’s ad program brings the total up some from Google’s total in the image above)
So what’s the point?. Well this is probably a good example of why someone who has made a million dollars in a few years, doesn’t have a million dollars. In fact, I don’t have anything close to a million dollars. But I have advertised a lot on the internet, and although internet advertising won’t be the only focus of this blog, I do consider myself somewhat knowledgeable in such things. And if you’re thinking about advertising online (or offline) sign up for an Adwords account. They’ll give you some Analytics features to start tracking where your traffic is coming from, and you can at least toy around with creating ads. Once you start the creation process they’ll give you some suggested terms that you might want to advertise on, and I think these are useful for many things. Its interesting to me to see what Google “thinks” I should be putting ads on. Kind of like glimpsing into the eye of the beast.
Thats all for now.
